Headlamps: Shopping guide

Headlamps are indispensable aids for many activities - from working in the dark to sporting activities such as ski mountaineering, skiing, cycling and camping. However, choosing the right headlamp can be difficult as there are many parameters to consider. In this article, we will show you which parameters are important when buying a headlamp and which types are suitable for different activities.

Important parameters

Brightness (lumen)
The brightness, measured in lumens, indicates how brightly the headlamp shines. For general use, a brightness of around 100-200 lumens is sufficient, but for more demanding activities such as ski mountaineering or cycling at night, a headlamp with a higher brightness (300 lumens and more) is suitable.

Range
This parameter indicates how far the headlamp shines. The range is particularly important for activities where you need to see far ahead, such as cycling or skiing at night.

Operating time
The operating time varies depending on the light mode. The maximum mode offers the highest brightness, but the battery life is shorter. The energy-saving mode offers a longer operating time with lower brightness. It is important to consider how long the headlamp should shine without changing the battery or recharging.

Charging sources
Headlamps can be powered by various energy sources - from replaceable batteries (AA, AAA) to built-in rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable headlamps are practical as they can be easily recharged via a USB cable.

Water resistance
Water resistance is particularly important for activities in bad weather or in damp environments. It is indicated by the IP (Ingress Protection) rating, where IPX4 protects against splashing water and IPX7 against immersion in water up to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes.

Classification of headlamps

Work headlamps
They are robust, have a longer battery life and are often more water-resistant.

Sports headlamps (ski mountaineering, skiing, cycling)
These headlamps have a high brightness and a long range. They are lightweight and ergonomic so as not to restrict movement.

Camping headlamps
They usually have a lower brightness, which is sufficient for reading or preparing food. They have a long battery life and often also have a red light so as not to interfere with night vision.

Manufacturers
The leading manufacturers of headlamps include Black Diamond, Petzl, Fenix and Armytek. These brands are known for their quality, reliability and innovation.

Interesting fact
